Hip Replacement Surgeon in Mira Road, Mumbai
Hip arthritis is misdiagnosed more often than knee arthritis, because the hip refers pain to the back and the knee. This page covers how to recognise a hip problem, why avascular necrosis matters so much in younger patients, and what total hip replacement actually involves — at Surgicare Plus, Mira Road East.
Recognising It
Hip Arthritis Does Not Always Feel Like Hip Pain
Hip problems are misdiagnosed more often than knee problems, because the hip refers pain elsewhere. Patients arrive having been treated for months for a back problem, or a knee problem, when the joint at fault is the hip.
The pattern that points to the hip is groin pain — often described as a deep ache in the front of the groin, sometimes radiating down the front of the thigh towards the knee. Pain felt only in the buttock or only below the knee more often comes from the lumbar spine. A simple functional clue: patients with hip arthritis struggle to put on socks, cut toenails, or get in and out of a car, because the difficulty is with rotation rather than straight-line movement.
Common reasons a hip is replaced
- — Osteoarthritis — wear of the joint surface, usually with age
- — Avascular necrosis (AVN) — loss of blood supply to the femoral head, which affects notably younger patients and is associated with steroid use, alcohol, sickle cell disease and previous trauma. AVN is a significant cause of hip replacement in India, and caught early it may be treatable without replacement
- — Fracture of the hip — particularly displaced femoral neck fractures in older patients
- — Inflammatory arthritis — rheumatoid and ankylosing spondylitis
- — Childhood hip disease — developmental dysplasia or Perthes presenting as early arthritis in adulthood
The Operation
Total Hip Replacement — What Is Involved
In a total hip replacement, the worn femoral head is removed and replaced with a stem and ball, and the socket is resurfaced with a cup and bearing liner. It is one of the most reliably successful operations in surgery, frequently described as the operation of the century, because pain relief is usually rapid and substantial.
Bearing surfaces
The combination of ball and liner determines wear behaviour. Ceramic-on-polyethylene and ceramic-on-ceramic are commonly used in younger, more active patients for their low wear rates; metal-on-polyethylene with highly cross-linked polyethylene remains an excellent and well-proven choice. The right selection depends on your age, activity level and bone quality — it is worth asking why a particular bearing is being recommended for you.
Approach
The hip can be approached from the back (posterior), the side (lateral) or the front (anterior). Each has advantages and trade-offs, and published outcomes converge by several months whichever is used. Surgeon familiarity with the approach matters more than the approach itself.
Recovery
Hip replacement recovery is often faster than knee replacement, which surprises patients. Standing and walking with support usually begins on the day of surgery or the day after, hospital stay is typically three to five days, and walking aids are needed for roughly two to six weeks. Because the hip is a ball-and-socket joint, regaining movement is generally less of a struggle than regaining knee flexion — the rehabilitation is real, but usually less demanding.
Indicative cost in Mumbai is approximately ₹1,80,000 to ₹4,00,000, varying widely with implant and bearing choice. The cost and insurance guide covers how packages, room-rent limits and pre-authorisation work — these apply equally to hip surgery.

Locally
Hip Replacement Without the Journey Into Town
Dr. Avinash A. Kachare consults at Surgicare Plus, Poonam Cluster 2, Mira Road East, and operates at the associated hospitals in the area including Wockhardt Hospital and Gurukripa Hospital. Training includes an MS in Orthopedics from LTMMC & GH (Sion Hospital), a fellowship in robotic joint replacement and 3D printing at Queen Mary Hospital, University of Hong Kong, and a fellowship in trauma and 3D printing — relevant to hip work, where fracture reconstruction and complex primary replacement frequently overlap.
Patients attend from Mira Road East and West, Bhayandar, Kashimira, Dahisar, Borivali, Kandivali, Naigaon, Vasai, Virar and Thane. See joint replacement across Mira Bhayandar for travel details by area.
Training
Fellowship in Robotic Joint Replacement
Hip replacement rewards accuracy more than almost any other joint operation: cup position decides whether the hip dislocates, how the leg lengths compare, and how long the bearing lasts. Robotic assistance exists to make that position repeatable rather than approximate.
