Getting Here

The Journey from Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam to Mumbai is a direct flight of about six hours. Air Tanzania flies the route non-stop, currently every day. Six hours is a manageable journey home after joint surgery with an aisle seat, compression stockings and regular walks in the cabin.

From Zanzibar, Arusha, Mwanza or Dodoma you will usually connect through Dar es Salaam. If the connection is tight, spend a night in Dar before the long leg rather than arriving exhausted for pre-operative tests.

Your Visa Route

Tanzania is on the official e-Visa list, so Tanzanian passport holders can apply for the e-Medical Visa online at indianvisaonline.gov.in, with the hospital letter attached. For revision surgery or a complex case, the regular medical visa through the High Commission of India in Dar es Salaam gives you more room.

Yellow fever: Tanzania is not on the list of yellow-fever endemic countries that India’s Ministry of Health applies to arriving passengers, so flying direct from Dar es Salaam you should not need a certificate. If you have been in, or leave the airport while transiting, a listed country such as Kenya or Uganda, carry a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. The list can change — check the current one on the Ministry of Health point-of-entry page before you fly.

Cost

What You Should Budget

Indian hospitals quote a surgical package, and the implant is not included in it. Ask that question of anyone quoting you a price, anywhere in India.

A single knee or hip runs roughly $3,400 to $5,000 for the package and implant together; both knees in one trip, $5,300 to $8,000. Flights, visa, accommodation and physiotherapy after discharge sit outside that.

Language, Practicalities and Timing

Consultations with Dr. Kachare are in English. If you, or the family member travelling with you, would be more comfortable in Swahili for the hospital stay, say so early so an interpreter can be arranged — do not assume it is included.

Mumbai has a long-established East African community, and the food, pharmacies and practicalities are easier to navigate than most first-time visitors expect. The monsoon months from June to September make getting about with a walking frame harder; September to March is the easier season to recover in.

Afterwards

Follow-Up Once You Are Home

You fly home with operative notes, implant make, model and batch numbers, discharge summary and imaging, so an orthopedic surgeon in Dar es Salaam, Arusha or Mwanza can take over routine care. A written physiotherapy protocol travels with you, and video review with Dr. Kachare continues at six weeks, three months and one year.

If a serious problem appears months later you will be treated where you are, not in Mumbai — that is true of every medical travel arrangement anywhere. What reduces the risk is complete documentation and a surgeon who stays reachable.

Next Step

Start by Sending Your Imaging

Free for international patients: X-ray review and first video consultation, with no obligation. Neither requires you to travel. Send your X-rays or CT on WhatsApp or by email with a short history — your age, how long the pain has lasted, what has already been tried, and any previous surgery — and you will get a personal reply from Dr. Kachare, the surgeon who would operate, within 24 hours (IST).

The first video consultation is free, so you can see him and ask your questions before anything is booked. You deal with him personally, start to finish. If the honest answer is that you do not need surgery yet, or that it is better done closer to home, you will be told that.

Travelling from Tanzania — Frequently Asked

Yes. Air Tanzania flies Dar es Salaam to Mumbai non-stop, in about six hours. Schedules change, so check the current timetable, and do not buy a non-refundable return until your surgery date is confirmed — recovery is not entirely predictable.

It depends entirely on your policy. Some private insurers reimburse treatment abroad; many do not. Ask yours in writing before you travel, and tell Dr. Kachare at the outset if you need itemised invoices and medical reports in a particular format — easy to arrange in advance, and nearly impossible afterwards.

Often, yes, and for someone flying from East Africa it frequently makes sense — one journey, one recovery. Whether it is safe for you depends on your heart, lungs and general fitness, and it is decided after review rather than in advance. Expect about a week more in Mumbai than for one knee.
